“It’s like living inside your own photo album. There are memories all around you in a very beautifully curated way.”

The Contemporaries Calendar kicked off with a bang last Thursday night, with members invited into the beautiful Sydney home of creative couple Liane Rossler and Sam Marshall for an intimate evening amongst their private art collection.

Liane is an artist, designer and creative advisor and a co-founder of the iconic Australian design company, Dinosaur Designs. Sam is an award winning architect, best known for the 2012 redevelopment of Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art. But it’s their effortlessly art filled home that is perhaps the creative power couple’s most telling achievement.

The effervescent Jess Scully, writer, curator and director of Vivid Ideas, led a fascinating conversation with Liane and Sam that brought the collection alive. The duo spoke about how they choose works and shared that for them, acquisitions are not an academic or value driven decision, but rather about what inspires them and unlocks a new feeling.

“It’s definitely about the object itself rather than who did it or how much it cost. We’ve got a work on the wall made by our daughter next to works made by established artists. You might find something for $5 and put it next to something worth $5000. The relationship between objects is just as important.”

“It’s about the art of discovery. Finding something new that speaks to you is where the excitement is.”

The couple shared that the first and only work they have bought together was an early photograph by lauded Australian photographer Bill Henson.  The work hangs proudly in their living room, reminding them of their meeting 17 years ago.

Liane reflected that one of the things she enjoys most about their collection is the way in which the art and objects tell the story of their life and evoke special memories of a time or place. For them, the collection is like living inside a photo album with their family’s memories surrounding them in a beautifully curated way.

The evening was spent socialising, exploring the collection and enjoying poolside drinks courtesy of Lisa McGuigan Wines and Sydney Brewery and lavish seasonal catering from Super Food Sushi.
